BBC director general to depart in April after resignation
The BBC's director general is to leave the broadcaster in April, five months after he announced his resignation amid a storm about the way Panorama edited a Donald Trump speech. Tim Davie stayed in his post after announcing his resignation in November, but will depart on 2 April. He will be replaced by an interim DG, Rhodri Talfan Davies, who has been director of nations since 2021 and is currently leading the BBC's work on generative AI. The search is under way for a permanent director general, one of the most demanding jobs in the British media. Davie has been responsible for dealing with a series of scandals and crises since becoming the BBC's 17th director general in 2020.

Artificial intelligence could help 'normalize' child sexual abuse as graphic images erupt online: experts
Fox News correspondent Grady Trimble has the latest on fears the technology will spiral out of control on'Special Report.' Artificial intelligence is opening the door to a disturbing trend of people creating realistic images of children in sexual settings, which could increase the number of cases of sex crimes against kids in real life, experts warn. AI platforms that can mimic human conversation or create realistic images exploded in popularity late last year into 2023 following the release of chatbot ChatGPT, which served as a watershed moment for the use of artificial intelligence. As the curiosity of people across the world was piqued by the technology for work or school tasks, others have embraced the platforms for more nefarious purposes. The National Crime Agency, which is the UK's lead agency combating organized crime, warned this week that the proliferation of machine-generated explicit images of children is having a "radicalizing" effect "normalizing" pedophilia and disturbing behavior against kids.

The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence to Ensure Food Security and Development
ROME, Mar 8 2021 (IPS) - One year after the call for a group of international and religious organizations and important multinational companies to incorporate ethics into the design of artificial intelligence (AI), Pope Francis said in a tweet: "I hope that more and more people of good will cooperate in the promotion of the common good, the protection of those lagging behind and the development of a shared algor-ethics". The message of the Catholic pontiff, on 28 February, was related to the Call of Rome, which seeks to actively incorporate ethics in artificial intelligence based on a transparent, inclusive, socially advantageous and responsible process. The document, "Rome Call for Artificial Intelligence Ethics", was launched on 28 February 2020 by the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Microsoft and IBM, with the endorsement of the Italian government. According to Paglia, it is necessary to build a new alliance between research, science and ethics "to build a world in which technology is in favor of the people" because "without equitable and just development" there can be no justice or peace. The Rome Call invites governments, institutions and the private sector to adopt a common responsibility in order to ensure that digital innovation and technological progress are at the service of human creativity.

ESA's Φ-Week: Digital Twin Earth, Quantum Computing and AI Take Center Stage
Digital Twin Earth will help visualize, monitor, and forecast natural and human activity on the planet. The model will be able to monitor the health of the planet, perform simulations of Earth's interconnected system with human behavior, and support the field of sustainable development, therefore, reinforcing Europe's efforts for a better environment in order to respond to the urgent challenges and targets addressed by the Green Deal. ESA's 2020 Φ-week event kicked off this morning with a series of stimulating speeches on Digital Twin Earth, updates on Φ-sat-1, which was successfully launched into orbit earlier this month, and an exciting new initiative involving quantum computing. The third edition of the Φ-week event, which is entirely virtual, focuses on how Earth observation can contribute to the concept of Digital Twin Earth – a dynamic, digital replica of our planet which accurately mimics Earth's behavior. Constantly fed with Earth observation data, combined with in situ measurements and artificial intelligence, the Digital Twin Earth provides an accurate representation of the past, present, and future changes of our world.

New MI5 head promises to focus on China and harness AI
MI5's deputy head will take the top job at the spy agency next month promising a sharper focus on China and to work more closely with the private sector in harnessing artificial intelligence in tackling hostile state and terrorist activity. Ken McCallum, a career MI5 officer, has been the agency's deputy director general since April 2017 and was seen by insiders as the heir apparent at an organisation that prides itself on internal appointments to its leading position. The Glaswegian is the youngest ever boss of MI5, although the organisation will only say he is "in his 40s" – and replaces Sir Andrew Parker, who had been due to step down in April after seven years as the director general in charge of the the UK's domestic security service. How Israel Turned Decades Of Medical Data Into Digital Health Gold
All over the world, healthcare systems are struggling to provide the service their patients demand while also working within the legal and budgetary constraints set by governments or other institutions like insurance companies and hospitals. Digitization of medical records and new medical technologies have yet to touch large swathes of the world's medical institutions. In many countries, because of differences in the way records are kept, healthcare services and organizations are unable to "talk" to each other and cannot share data. That makes for inefficiency; if data cannot be shared between institutions, things as basic as blood tests need to be repeated each time a patient goes to a different doctor or institution. Israel's health care system, although consistently highly rated in international surveys, suffers from the same infrastructure issues: hospitals can be overcrowded, and non-critical patients sometimes wait for operations.

Finland's grand AI experiment
Jaana Partanen is not your typical AI programming geek. Until a year ago, the 59-year-old dentist from the Finnish town of Mikkeli had no idea what to make of terms like "machine learning" or "neural networks." Now, Partanen spends her evenings learning the basics of coding and she is thinking about how to apply artificial intelligence to her job, either to help write up medical summaries or perform orthodontics. "I can see it [artificial intelligence] is already here, and it serves us -- very much actually," she said, adding that following the latest developments in the field has become a hobby. She's one of tens of thousands of non-technology experts who are taking part in a grand experiment aimed at repurposing the country's economy toward high-end applications of artificial intelligence. The idea has a simple, Nordic ring to it: Start by teaching 1 percent of the country's population, or about 55,000 people, the basic concepts at the root of artificial technology, and gradually build on the number over the next few years.
